POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Teacher works cooperatively with the Teacher to plan and implement the daily education program for the children. Under the supervision of the Teacher, the Assistant Teacher will ensure that the education program is developmentally appropriate and meets the individual needs of children as mandated by Head Start, state and local standards. In the absence of the Teacher, the Teacher Assistant takes responsibility for the management of the classroom.  

*This full time position includes summer programming (staffing to be determined by parent demand). Scheduled breaks and holidays will be based on the program calendar and coincide – as feasible – with the agency and other program calendars.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Assistant Teacher is supervised by the Lead Teacher in collaboration with the Master Teacher.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY TASKS

Child Development

  • Observe, assess and document each assigned child’s health, skills, behavior, growth and development.
  • Provide opportunities for Head Start/Early Head Start children to develop positive self-images and experience success.
  • Assist with developing an individualized educational strength plan for each child.
  • Contribute to and participate in child and family staffings.
  • As assigned, coordinate referrals for children with special needs with the Family Support staff and Disabilities Coordinator.

Classroom Management

  • Maintain an attractive and stimulating learning environment and encourage child’s independence and self-selection of activities.
  • Ensure that all children are under appropriate supervision and guidance at all times.
  • Maintain a clean, organized and sanitary classroom environment.

Curriculum

  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate classroom activities that will enhance the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of each child.
  • Develop lesson plans with goals, objectives, activities and outcomes for children.
  • Assist in the development of the program’s educational program.
  • Assist in the integration of other areas (i.e. health, nutrition, mental health, disabilities, and parent involvement) into the Educational Plan.
  • Implement the program’s educational curriculum and assess its effectiveness. 

Parent Involvement

  • As assigned by the Teacher, schedule and meets with parents around their child’s progress.
  • As assigned, schedule two home visits for each assigned child to assist in clarifying the child and family needs.
  • Encourage parent participation in the program and in implementing education activities for their children at home.
  • Develop effective partnerships with parents by encouraging input into all aspects of the educational program.

Administration

  • Participate in the program recruitment effort.
  • Participate as a team member and share information with the Family Support Specialist and Teacher.
  • Maintain confidentiality of children’s information.

 Other

Perform other duties as assigned, within the scope of the job description.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development with a minimum of 27 semester hours of credit in Early Childhood or Child Development and a minimum of six months experience teaching in an early childhood programs.

Candidates with 1 year or less toward completing the required degree program, and two years experience in a relevant early childhood group setting will also be considered.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS/ABILITITIES REQUIRED

  • Knowledge of Early Head Start/Head Start or other developmental child care programs.
  • Knowledge of child development and early childhood principles, practices and curricula.
  • Able to work as a cooperative and supportive team member.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a program located in a high-risk, low income community.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Must be able to physically interact with children, including bending, kneeling, sitting on the floor, lifting, climbing and walking.
  • Must have good command of English language and grammar, both verbal and written.
  • Must be able to remain abreast of developments in the child care field to enhance professional growth and development.
