Next Door History

1969 - Next Door began as a youth and young adult outreach program
           of a central city church, Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

1971 - Next Door incorporated in the State of Wisconsin as a non-profit
           501 (c)(3) organization.

1971 - Program services expanded to include services for children.

1973 - Next Door opened its Cornerstone Children and Youth Center.

1974 - The Genesis Outpatient Alcohol and Drug Treatment program was opened.

1975 - Next Door began its home-based Early On program.

1978 - Next Door's Home Start Program was started.

1986 - The Adult Education (ABE/GED) program opened .

1986 - New Frontiers Employment and summer youth employment programs began.

1987 - Next Door was given Hope Apartments on North 27th Street, which
           provided permanent housing for low-income residents.

1992 - The newly renovated Helwig Family Community Center became the home of
           Next Door programs.

1993 - Next Door's first classroom-based Head Start program began.

1995 - Next Door shifted its focus to to children from birth to 12 years of age.

1996 - Next Door received its Early Head Start demonstration grant.

1997 - Next Door began its four and five year old kindergarten programs
           funded by the Milwaukee Public Schools.

1998 - A full service pediatric clinic opened in the Helwig Family Community Center
           through collaboration with Children's Medical Group.

1999 - Cardinal Stritch University began offering college classes at the Helwig
           Family Community Center.

2000 - Next Door receives a 3-year Fatherhood Demonstration Grant.

2002 - Next Door and the Buffett Family Foundations execute an agreement
           to co-develop The Educare Center of Milwaukee.

2004 - Next Door breaks ground for The Educare Center of Milwaukee.

2005 - The Educare Center of Milwaukee opens in September.

2005 - Next Door Charter School opens under a contract with Milwaukee Public

2007 - Next Door receives a Kresge Foundation grant for “Building a
           Future” capital campaign.

2007 - IRS reclassifies Next Door's 501(c)(3) status to include 509(a)(1)
           public charity status.

2007 - Renovation of Helwig Family Community Center completed.

2008 - New and revised website launched.

2009 - Next Door Celebrates its 40th year; Nominated by the Governor to be a Head Start Center of Excellence.

2010 - Groundbreaking for onsite Children's Hospital Medical & Dental Clinic; Received state designation of one of two Excellence Centers nominated from Wisconsin.

2011 - Early Head Start expansion; State funding for Family Foundations Home Visitation Program to serve families through Prenatal Care Coordination

2012 - 2013 - Next Door becomes Milwaukee County's second largest Head Start program administrator; Purchases building on Capitol Drive in Milwaukee for new school site.
