Job Title: On-Call Bus Monitor

Status: Non-Exempt

Department: Early Childhood

Reports To: Head Start Director

Type of Position: Part-time


 

Overview:

Under the supervision of the Bus Driver in conjunction with the Transportation Manager, the Bus Monitor is responsible for assisting in the transporting of Head Start children and assisting them to the classroom.

Responsibilities:

  • Helps in daily transporting of children to and from the center.
  • Assists bus driver in maintaining discipline on the bus
  • Checks and maintains First Aid Kit.
  • Ensure that all children are seat-belted before the vehicle is in motion.
  • Assist the Bus Driver in performing safety drills (i.e., bus evacuations)
  • Assists in daily bus checks.
  • Assists in special trips/field trips.
  • Assists parents in signing children on/off the bus after the vehicle has come to a full stop.
  • In case of accident or breakdown, will assist in supervision and first aid treatment of children, if necessary.
  • Provides coverage for other bus monitors when they are unavailable.
  • Attends all required staff meetings, training workshops, and other sessions.
  • Helps disseminate information to parents on center activities (i.e., parent meetings, workshops, mobile library, etc.).
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • General knowledge of Head Start Program
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with community, staff, and parents.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Sensitive to cultural, economic and language differences.
  • Must be willing to have a physical exam and a tuberculosis skin test at the time of hire.
  • Must possess a current first aid/CPR certificate at all times and have physical exams every two (2) years.
  • Position requires constant sitting, standing, walking, twisting, and bending.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to withstand exposure to a noisy environment.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit/stand and move freely throughout the day. The employee must also climb stairs and walk frequently, with bending, twisting and reaching. Position requires constant sitting, standing, walking, twisting, and bending.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to withstand exposure to a noisy environment
