Blankets of Love Project Benefits At-Risk Preschoolers at Next Door

1.7.15

Next Door is the recipient of over 1000 handmade blankets thanks to the efforts of Sara Wesemann (left) of Butler, WI who singlehandedly created the Blankets of Love project to provide a blanket to each preschooler in Next Door’s Head Start program. WATCH VIDEO

Wesemann and her husband Jeremy presented some of  the blankets to the young students at Next Door’s Capitol site school, on December 12, 2014.

“We recently joined a council of young philanthropists within Children’s Hospital (Leaders Who Care) and we visited Next Door last summer,” said Wesemann. “This agency in particular really touched our hearts. It was a shocking experience to sit within this education center and to hear and see the struggles that these children endure each day. We knew we had to do something and so the Blankets of Love project evolved.”

From September to December 2014, Wesemann raised funds to help purchase the yards and yards of material needed to make fleece-tie blankets. On November 22 ,2014 hundreds of volunteers gathered at Riverside Junior High in Watertown, WI to make the blankets. Additional blankets were made by youth and service groups throughout the Milwaukee area.

“We are so pleased that Sara chose Next Door children to be the benefactors of this incredibly generous gift and for mobilizing hundreds of volunteers and donors for the blanket-making event,” said Executive Director Carol Keintz. “Our little ones will be delighted to receive their blankets. What a long-lasting gift for them!”
