Next Door Charter School was formed to help the surrounding community by offering an intensive and comprehensive approach to school readiness.
Next Door Charter School, which specializes in K3, K4 and K5, concentrates on language and literacy development and utilizes a play-based curriculum. Next Door Charter School offers innovative methods that incorporate cutting edge research-based strategies not commonly practiced in traditional early learning environments. The school operates in collaboration with Head Start and Milwaukee's Social Development Commission.
The school is child-centered and family focused. This underlying principle encourages education based relationships while strengthening the social competency of students. This approach seeks to strengthen children's reciprocal relationships with other children, family, teachers, society, and the school environment.
The school’s “family approach” actively seeks to engage parents in their child’s educational development and acknowledges that parents are their child’s primary educators. Also, by providing services on-site for a wide range of age groups, Next Door minimizes daily transitions for students and offers a needed solution for working parents. Children, teachers, parents, and community interact and work together to build a community committed to successful student outcomes.
Every Next Door Charter School family receives family support services from a team of a credentialed family advocates. Family support helps parents utilize community resources, secure a medical home, set up a plan to overcome obstacles, and build a connection to school.
A health component, including a nurse on staff, forms an important part of the school’s overall approach to school readiness. For special needs students, the Special Education staff comprised of professionals, consultants and support staff form a multi-disciplinary team that addresses not only the primary causes but also the secondary factors that influence a child’s behavior.
