Head Start

Next Door Head Start program provides a supportive climate for all children and families so that they feel welcomed and supported in their endeavors to reach their full potential. Children who participate in Next Door Head Start develop into confident, independent and social learners who will successfully transition from Next Door to elementary schools throughout the Milwaukee area.

Head Start is a national program that provides:

  • School readiness
  • Parent and family involvement
  • Professional and dedicated staff
  • Information to parents on useful community resources
  • Family Advocate Specialists who collaborate with parents
  • Home Visitation

One of our primary goals of is to help families establish a long-term relationship with a primary health care provider.  Next Door works with each family to secure and record medical and dental homes for participating children.  This relationship is crucial to achieving effective health-related prevention and intervention services.  To assist in this area, Next Door has developed several collaborative relationships including Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Children’s Health in Metcalfe Park and Concordia (CHIMC), the Medical College of Wisconsin, Cardinal Stritch University’s College of Nursing, the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Dental Center’s Clear Pass Program, and the City of Milwaukee Health Department.

The Next Door Early Head Start/Head Stat Policy Council fulfills its role of shared program governance according to the standards outlined in the Head Start Performance Standards. We believe that parents are the most important influence in their child’s education and development. Next Door Foundation supports parents in this role and we make information, experiences, and other resources available throughout the year. Parent involvement in every part of the program is necessary to assure the most benefit for Head Start children.

Next Door Head Start has two different program options-centers based and home based. Programming services include: full-day and half-day classes (Monday – Thursday) and weekly home-visits for home-based. The home-based services provide flexibility in the range of services offered to young children and their families in their home.  Many home-based families transition from Next Door Early Head Start to Next Door Head Start.
