Volunteer Opportunities

The children, families and staff say "Thank You" to all our volunteers.  There are numerous ways you or your volunteer group can be involved:

Library Resource Aide

Volunteers are needed to help staff keep library in order, unpack, and place books and other donated materials. Assist students, parents and educational staff with reading materials and other literacy resources.

This opportunity is available during the school year from September - May; Hours are flexible. Contact: the Books for Kids Coordinator, 414-562-2929 ext. 109

Read With Me - Read one-on-one with Preschoolers

Help boost a child's pre-reading skills by reading one-on-one or in a small group with 2 to 5 year old children enrolled in Next Door's Early Head Start, Head Start and Charter School Programs. 10-15 volunteers are needed per session.

This opportunity runs from September - May, Tuesdays 9:00 am to 11:00 am / 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm and Wednesdays 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Contact: the Books for Kids Coordinator, 414-562-2929 ext. 109 .. 

United Way Reader/Tutor/Mentor Initiative 

Volunteers commit to reading to children ages 2-5 a minimum of 2 sessions a yr, totaling a minimum of 4 volunteer hours. Have fun reading one-to-one or to small groups of children in our Books For Kids library. Sessions held Tuesdays 9-11am, Tuesdays 1:30-3:30pm, and Wednesdays 9-11am. Book Cleaning, Labeling, and Sorting

Volunteers assist the Books For Kids program by cleaning, repairing, labeling, and sorting donated books into categories. Hours are flexible. Contact Pam Edyburn Books For Kids Coordinator at 414-562-2929 Ext 109 for information. 

Hold a Book Drive or Donate Your Children's Books:

We always need new or gently used children's books from infant board books to young adult.  A great opportunity for school groups, church groups, Girl & Boy Scout Troops and corporate groups to hold an easy and fun service project of a book drive. Contact Pam Edyburn, Books For Kids Coordinator, at 414-562-2929 Ext 109 for more information.  

Adult Tutor

Volunteers are needed to work one-on-one with adult learners on basic building reading comprehension, writing, and math skills in preparation for the GED Test.

This opportunity is available during the school year from September – May; Monday – Thursday - Morning and afternoon sessions

Head Start Classroom Assistant

Volunteers are needed who enjoy interacting with children. Volunteers should be responsible, patient, reliable and willing to assist in the classroom with children, ages 3-5 years and to help set up art activities for the children, play games, read stories, sing songs, serve meals/snacks, help with outdoor play and assist with field trips. Asking for at least 2 hours or more per week. Minimum age is 18.

This opportunity is available during the school year from September - May; Monday - Thursday, either 8am - noon or 1pm - 4:30pm.

Educare Classroom Aide - Infants

Volunteers are needed to hold, feed and rock infants. Volunteers should be responsible, patient, reliable and willing to interact with infants on the floor, talk, laugh and sooth infants. Asking for at least 2 hours or more per week. Minimum age is 16.

This opportunity is available year round from August to July; Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
